3PL and the Year Ahead
Early signs are evident already of NZ businesses addressing the run down levels of inventory which were seen as a result of the difficult trading times in 2009. It is likely that there will be an increase in purchasing, although most certainly with a more cautious approach in ensuring stock levels are tightly controlled. Supporting this are new channels of B2C activity designed to clear aged & delinquent stock which are gaining momentum in the marketplace.
Uncertainty from the recession has translated into some key learnings for many businesses . Companies that were hurt by not having enough flexibility in their model will present new opportunities to 3PL providers, as an increasing interest in “user pays” solutions becomes apparent.
2010 may also see a continuation of further acquisitions and mergers unfolding within the industry.

Cutting out costs, reducing errors and improving customer service.
These goals have always seemed to be mutually exclusive. Removing costs usually comes down to removing labor in a 3PL environment. As a generalization, cutting costs (through labor reductions) increases errors and leads to reduced, not enhanced, customer service.
There is an answer to this though – reduce labor by removing work, not workers.

NZ Customs seizes over one tonne of ‘P’ precursor last year
The New Zealand Customs Services has, for the first time, intercepted over one tonne of methamphetamine precursor ContacNT in a single calendar year. The one tonne mark was passed in November 2009.
The amount Customs intercepted last year was enough to manufacture at least 246 kilograms of methamphetamine, or ‘P’, saving an estimated $138.6 million dollars of potential harm to the community.
Customs’ war on ‘P’ is part of the Government’s Methamphetamine Action Plan, which is targeting organised crime syndicates who are behind these importations. ?
RFID to See Further Growth in 2010
In 2009, the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) market grew to US$5.56 billion, having almost tripled in five years. Being largely based on government backed military, identity card, financial card, passport and other projects and legally mandated requirements such as animal tagging. This market is recession proof, continuing to grow rapidly. Of the total, US$2.18 billion consisted of passive tags, the prime candidate for being printed in future. First to market with entirely printed transistor-based RFID is Kovio.

FedEx Launches Expedited Delivery Service
FedEx Express has launched FedEx International Next Flight, an expedited delivery service from the UK and Ireland to most worldwide locations. The service will be the fastest FedEx service for customs-cleared, door-to-door delivery of urgent international shipments.
FedEx International Next Flight will be available to more than 220 countries and territories, with shipments moved via commercial airlines on the first suitable flight from the origin to the destination, or via ground transportation if that is faster.
The service will meet the needs of customers that require critical, rush shipments, out-of-hours pickup and delivery, Friday pickup with weekend deliveries around the world, or weekend pickup with a Monday delivery.
